 Takshashilla

  • The world's first university was established in Takshashilla in 700 BCE.
  • 68 different streams of knowledge were taught and studied.
  • A wide range of subjects were taught by experienced masters: Vedas, Language, Grammar, Philosophy, Medicine, Surgery, – – Archery, Politics, Law, Warfare, Astronomy, Astrology, Accounts, Commerce, Futurology, Documentation, Occult, Music, Dance, etc.
  • Panini, the famous Sanskrit grammarian, Kautilya (Chanakya), and Charaka, the famous physician of ancient India, Jivaka and Chandragupta Maurya were the products of this university. It gained its importance again during the reign of Kanika. It was probably the earliest of the ancient seats of higher education.
  • Not only Indians but also students from as far as Babylonia, Greece, Syria, Arabia, Phoenicia and China came to study.
  • The university consists of 300 lecture halls with stones benches for sitting, laboratories, Observatory for astronomical research, Massive Libraries etc.

Nalanda

  • The Nalanda University was built in the 4th century BCE.
  • More than 10,500 students from across the world studied over 60 subjects at this university.
  • Great Aryabhatta was a student of Nalanda university.
